Youtube Recommendation: Baiao Malandro
Hamilton de Holanda with Andre Mehmari performing Baiao Malandro
I have developed a small obsession with this composition and performance, as well as with the works of Egberto Gismonti in general. He is the only multi-instrumentalist virtuoso who I am aware of, and has mastered two harmonic instruments (guitar and piano). He combines an incredible understanding of orchestration with an array of influences including Brazillian folk songs, choro pieces and a love for dissonance and the dramatic.
This tribute to Gismonti, plays as an appropriate meeting of piano and plucked strings. Both Mehmari and Holanda utilize the same playfulness and ruthlessness in dissonance with which Gismonti defined himself. I’d also recommend listening to Gismonti’s original arrangement in which he juxtaposes moments of melodic diatonicism with semi-tonal clusters that smash through rhythm and form.
