Berardi/Foran/Karlen - Hope in My Pocket
Berardi/Foran/Karlen features three of Australia’s most exciting jazz talents, Kristin Berardi (vocals), Rafael Karlen (tenor saxophone), and Sean Foran (piano). The collaborative trio was formed in 2014, when commissioned to write works for the ANZAC Centenary. Through this project, the trio created an intimate body of works that explored the powerful experiences and emotions of our ANZACs. This was later released as their debut album, Hope in My Pocket in 2015.
Intricately crafted, the album interweaves the musical backgrounds of all trio members. The group’s diverse influences of modern jazz, European folk music and classical music are all evident throughout the album. Individually, each musician contributes their own voice; Foran providing energetic, rhythmic ostinatos and Karlen offering sensitive melodic phrases. This is all complemented by the effortless vocals of Berardi, speaking so honestly of the hardships of the men and women of our military past. The album also features John Parker (drums) on a few tracks, adding contrast to the sparse, gentle sound of the majority of the album.
A few personal highlights of the album include the title track, Hope in My Pocket, as well as Will I Ever Rest and Separation.
Berardi/Foran/Karlen have an exciting new project in the works, collaborating with vibraphonist Pascal Schumacher. They have a series of shows coming up later in the year, including a show at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. You can catch them on Tuesday June 6 (7pm) at the Toff in Town!
